The rule: visit a designated area and choose three colors from Benjamin Moore paint deck.
Seventy Two oversized paint swatches displayed in geographical format
At the beginning of the Cold Moon I took the Benjamin Moore paint deck with me on my walks. This soon proved unwieldy, especially at night. Instead, I made voice recordings describing the chosen colors, then went home and chose the swatches to match my memory and recording. This process took hours of comparing paint chip colors to find the closest ones.
December’s full Moon is most commonly known as the Cold Moon—a Mohawk name that conveys the frigid conditions of this time of year, when cold weather truly begins to grip us. Cold moon was used by both the Cherokee and the Algonquin, though some Algonquin tribes used “Long Night Full Moon”. The term Long Night Moon is doubly appropriate, because the midwinter night is indeed long and the moon is above the horizon a long time. The midwinter full moon takes a high trajectory across the sky because it is opposite to the low sun.
