Portfolio > It was Evening all Afternoon > Endangered Species of Connecticut: Insects
I researched each insect species and the causes of endangerment. After looking at photos, I painted representations on 2.5x3.5” watercolor cards. The common name, Latin name, and status are written on the back of the card; the card is pinned to a glassine envelope in a system that makes conservation status visible. Species of special concern are pinned on top of envelopes; Threatened species under the envelope flap and endangered species inside the envelopes. Extirpated species are turned backwards inside the envelope.

Endangered Species of Connecticut: Insects, 2024, Watercolor, ink, graphite on paper, glassine envelopes, overall size variable; each insect card measures 3.5x2.5"

The painted cards are displayed on glassine envelopes, the type is used for storing insect specimens. The relationship of the card to the envelope signifies the status of the species.
A. Species of Special Concern, the least threatened category, are displayed on top of the envelope.
B. Threatened Species are displayed underneath the envelope flap
C. Endangered species are placed inside the envelope.
D. Extirpated species are inside the envelope. The card is flipped so that the painting is not visible. Extirpated species can be viewed in the Encyclopedia of Extirpation.
